In Loches’ Collegial church of Saint-Ours lies the tomb of Agnes Sorel, a woman who died at the age of 25 under rather mysterious circumstances.

The “Lady of Beauty,” as she was called, had been the official mistress of King Charles VII. She was immortalised many times over by the numerous paintings done of her with one breast bared. Despised by the Queen, she was the target of many conspiracies to distance her from the King. Ultimately, she died before being able to inform the King about a plot to hand him over to the English. A paleopathological study done in 2005 finally revealed the cause of her death: mercury poisoning.
